Citizens in Minnesota now may register to vote or update their registration status online, says Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.
“Today we join many states that have already demonstrated that online registration is secure and that it saves taxpayers money,” he said in a news release. Ritchie’s office developed the site, mnvotes.org.
“Ritchie says the move should provide extra convenience to voters, reduce errors caused by illegible handwriting and incomplete forms, and save governments money by cutting down on postage, printing and manual data entry,” the Associated Press reports.
Minnesota is one of more than a dozen states to allow citizens to register to vote online. The policy has increasingly gained support from both sides of the political aisle. In 2013, Illinois, Virginia, and West Virginia passed new laws. Learn more about online voter registration and other election law proposals in 2013 here.
