Several more groups joined the call on President Obama to ensure millions of Americans applying for benefits under the Affordable Care Act are not denied the opportunity to register to vote.
The groups represent civil rights, voting rights, and religious organizations, including the ACLU, League of Women Voters, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, OurTime.org, and others. Project Vote signed on to the letter.
The letter is part of a national effort to ensure full enforcement of the National Voter Registration Act under provisions of the Affordable Care Act. In January, Project Vote and Demos sent the President a letter urging him to take immediate action. Last month, Project Vote joined a coalition of more than 40 labor, civil rights, voting rights, and environmental organizations that also called on the President to ensure that all state and federal health exchanges are meeting their voter registration obligations under the NVRA.
The nationwide effort has reached a victory in at least one state. In a landmark settlement, California agreed last month to provide voter registration services to its health exchange clients in accordance with the NVRA.
