This week marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Civil rights leaders are gathering with the public to discuss how today’s issues with voting rights and other civil rights are “linked to the 1960s fight” for equality.
“I am not going to stand by and let the Supreme Court take the right to vote away from us,” said Rep. John Lewis on the Court’s recent decision to gut the Voting Rights Act. Lewis, who helped plan the original March on Washington in 1963, recently spoke at a rally to commemorate the anniversary.
“The vote is precious…It is the most powerful, nonviolent tool we can use in a democratic society and we’ve got to use it,” he exclaimed.
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will deliver a speech at Lincoln Memorial, the site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
